The latest Nigerian box office report had dropped from the Cinema Exhibitors Association Nigeria, CEAN, for the weekend ending on August 29, 2021. Here are the talking points from the CEAN Nollywood box office report:

Nollywood Box Office – Bad Comments makes 12m debut

The Jim Iyke-led pic, Bad Comments, opened to an impressive debut of over N12 million at the latest Nollywood box office. Directed by Moses Inwang – who helmed May release, Lockdown – Bad Comments is a movie about the dark side of social media trolling and abuse. This film stars Jim Iyke, alongside Osas Ighodaro, Ben Toutou, and Sharon Ooja.

Bad Comments had the most location openings nationwide in its first weekend, with 54. This movie scored N12.4 million, from over eight thousand weekend admissions.

The Other Side makes underwhelming debut

Another Nollywood pic to debut at the weekend was The Other Side, the Blue Pictures release. But unlike Bad Comments, The Other Side opened to a lowkey debut at the Nollywood box office. The Jumoke Olatunde film only opened in 29 locations, and had a score of less than half a million (N610,400), from only 500 admissions.

The Other Side follows the story whose search for wealth leads him to abandon his family. This movie stars Omoni Oboli, Amanda Ebeye, and Bobby Obodo.

My Village People crosses N100m mark

Niyi Akinmolayan My Village People June 2021

The June 2021 release, My Village People, has gone north of the N100 million score at the Nollywood box office. In its 12th weekend at the Nigerian box office, this pic scored just over N400,000 thousand from just six locations. But that takes its overall tally to N100.1 million, making it the second Nollywood pic of the year to go past N100 million.

Directed by Niyi Akinmolayan (who also directed the other N100 million grossing film in Prophetess), My Village People stars Bovi Ugboma, Theresa Edem, Sophie Alakija, and Nkem Owoh, among others.

Other Talking Points:

  • In its second weekend at the Nollywood box office, The Protege ranked in second place, following a N6 million weekend. The action thriller, which stars Maggie Q, Samuel L Jackson, and Michael Keaton, opened in 53 locations at the weekend, and takes its overall tally to N22.1 million.
  • Disney’s Jungle Cruise is less than one million shy of the N50 million mark. This Jaume Collet-Serra directed pic, in its fifth weekend at the Nollywood box office, grossed just over N2 million, taking its total score to N49.3 million.

Bad Comments – N12.49 million

The Protege – N6.30 million

Free Guy – N4.38 million

Paw Patrol – N3.11 million
