The first teaser has dropped for Swallow, the Netflix original that will be helmed by Kunle Afolayan. Swallow is a film adaptation of the Sefi Atta 1980’s novel of the same name, and is directed by Afolayan, who helmed the pic Tenants of the House back in July, and starred in the Tunde Kelani directed biopic, Ayinla, in June.
Swallow is a project among a trio which Kunle Afolayan is expected to bring to life in the streaming platform giant. It will also be the latest Nigerian original on the platform, following films like Kenneth Gyang’s Oloture, and Citation (the latter of which Afolayan directed) in 2020, and the Return of the King series in late August.
Swallow, the novel from which this Kunle Afolayan adaptation follows, is a 2010 novel from Sefi Atta. The book is set in the 1980’s, in the era of the Nigerian government’s supposed War Against Indiscipline and Austerity Measure. The book is a journey of self-discovery, and it follows Tolani Ajao, a secretary working at the Federal Community Bank, whose roommate’s is thrust into the world of drug trafficking. This puts Tolani in a bother of temptation and morality.
Swallow, the film project from Kunle Afolayan, stars Eniola Akinbo, the artist known as Niyola, playing the role of Tolani Ajao. This movie also features Ijeoma Grace Agu, Deyemi Okanlawon, and Eniola Badmus, while Mercy Aigbe, Chioma Akpotha, and Kunle Idowu aka Frank Donga will also appear.
Swallow drops on Netflix from October 1, 2021
