VIVIAN ANTHONY BLOG INTERVIEW WITH
HIBISCUS QUEENSLEY BENSON
1. LETS MEET YOU( Name, State of Origin, date of birth, Educational background and what you do)
My ardor for Hibiscus is such that I have chosen it to replace the name title of “Miss”. Hence, I prefer to be addressed as “Hibiscus Queensley Benson” instead of “Miss Queensley Benson”.
I am a native of Abia State, a graduate of Banking and Finance from the Unique University of Port Harcourt, and my interest revolves around Storytelling, artificial intelligence, problem solving and Impact-making.
Thus, I am a prolific writer, a storyteller and the founder of Hibiscus Tales Brand, a storytelling brand where we harness the tool of storytelling to change narratives in lives and businesses.
I also make healthy Hibiscus drinks @Lite Hibiscus drinks.
2. WHEN AND HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR CAREER PATH?
Oh well, growing up as a young teenager, I always found myself observing my environment, inanimate objects, situations and coining out a story from it while pinpointing nuggets. That is where the whole game of storytelling started, specifically nonfictional. I kept writing and posting on my Facebook page and people kept telling me there’s something unique about my writings. At this point, I would love to specially acknowledge my lecturer, Dr. Samuel Ogunbiyi who relentlessly encouraged me into writing more stories.
However, I am still on the journey of self discovery. Although it’s been a work in progress and God has been my greatest consultant when it comes to finding my niche and purpose in life.
3. WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU HAD STARTING OUT?
I am a very creative person and I think outside the box a whole lot. That has been my major challenge. I used to be very confused on what to focus on since it seemed like I could do a whole lot of things. But growing up, I got to realise that finding a niche is vital, and even though I haven’t gotten to the height of self discovery, I know certainly that storytelling is something that will stay with me.
4. HOW FAR CAN YOU SAY YOU’VE COME IN YOUR CAREER
Oh well, on a scale of 1-10, I would say “5”, and I wouldn’t have gotten to this scale of “5” without God’s direction.
5. WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU HAVE IDENTIFIED WITH IF NOT POETRY
I’m not a poet. I’m just a realistic storyteller. I tell more of nonfictional stories, and of course, this isn’t all I’m going to identify with. I have interest in corporate writings, artificial intelligence and data science, and also in creative problem solving.
So in answering your question properly, if not storytelling, it would be some other major gift God deposited in me.
6. TELL US ABOUT YOUR MAGAZINE?
Oh yeah! Hibiscus Tales Magazine (HITmag), is more like one of my recent milestones in the field of storytelling. I observed and confirmed that alot of persons are tired of having to hear motivational rhymes such as “aspire to acquire the desire that you admire… (And all that ire.)” People are faced with real life situations everyday and they want to hear how someone who has been faced with something similar dealt with theirs. They want to hear how someone who has gone through the phase they are in, scaled through. Thus, I came up with the magazine idea where I shared my realistic experiences and lessons, and also gave others the opportunity to share theirs too.
Moving forward, Hibiscus Tales will advance into a conversation on twitter and eventually a TV show comprising of realistic stories and lessons.
7. TELL US THREE THINGS SO MANY PERSONS DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?
Hahahaha… This table!!! Hmmmm…
Okay, let’s see.
Ummmmh… I’m a very emotional person, although I’m already learning how to apply emotional intelligence in my interactions with people.
I could be a perfectionist sometimes when it comes to planning, and creativity generally. Most times it makes me procrastinate taking actions.
Finally, I get my writing and storytelling inspiration from the Holy Spirit.
8. TELL US ABOUT YOUR MEETING WITH CHIMAMADA ADICHIE
Oh well! My meeting with Chimamanda Adichie is something most people call a ‘coincidence’.
However, I feel it was programmed to happen somehow…
I actually met her at the airport, exchanged pleasantries, and networked with her.
It was an exciting one for me because she’s someone I look up to in the field of storytelling, as she had written a book(Purple Hibiscus) with a similar name as my Storytelling brand(Hibiscus Tales).
More fascinating, we made same hairstyles.
I look forward to connecting with her on a more serious platform.
9. WHAT ELSE IS COMING FROM YOU THAT YOU’VE NOT MADE KNOWN YET?
A whole lot, but I prefer not to announce things too early. With time, they will unveil.
10.WHAT ARE YOUR WORDS TO THOSE LOOKING UP TO YOU
1) Stay in God
2)” Giving up is equivalent to physical death, I can’t give up and still feel alive”-my quote
This is the reason I keep pushing towards greatness.
3) Learn to grab a lesson from every experience and encounter.
