In our recent heart to heart segment of vab blog by Lovel nwafor, we got into a heart to heart discussion with Adaku aka Lolo1 whose real name is OMOTUNDE ADEBOWALE DAVID. She got us talking on how she never had a personal relationship with Funke Akindele : Jennifer’s diary star prior to Jennifer’s diary TV series. She also talked about the do’s and don’t on becoming a professional in the entertainment industry; stating how to combine being an actor, mother, presenter, compere and a woman. Details of the interview below
CAN WE MEET YOU?
I am OMOTUMDE ADEBOWALE DAVID, a lot of people call me Lolo1 on radio basically and because a lot of people now watch Jennifer’s diary I seem to be Adaku to some.
WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?
I grew up in ijebu ode, but I started my primary school in Lagos, I did primary 1&2 and then went to a boarding school in primary 3 that was when I went to ijebu ode and completed my primary and secondary education. I attended Christ apostolic church school and from there I moved onto Anglican girls grammar school ijebu ode before moving on to Lagos to complete my tertiary education. I attended Lagos State University, where I studied law and graduated before going to law school.
WHEN DID YOU PROFESSIONALLY BEGAN YOUR CAREER AND WHAT DID YOU START WITH?
Well I did a lot of acting in church, initially I was in the drama department and I took it as a serious job, trust me I put my whole heart into it and from there I worked with Federal radio cooperation (FRC).
IS WAZOBIA FM THE FIRST AND ONLY RADIO STATION YOU’VE WORKED IT?
I was with Metro one, from metro 97.5 I have went to radio one; I did some years with them before I moved to Wazobia where I have been since 2008.
HOW DO YOU COMBINE BEING AN ACTOR, PRESENTER AND COMPERE ?
For me combination I just about setting priorities. I belly that as women we are created to multitask because inside us is a lot of thing which includes: a mum, aunty, wife, sister, a career woman, so manythings that women do and I believe if you thoroughly love what you do you would make room for everyone. You just have to set it according to priorities and I also tell myself that if everything you love is in the same space it makes things easier for you to achieve. So for me: acting, singing, being on radio are still in the same art circle. It really isn’t easy though but when you love it you will bend over for some inorder to achieve what you want
WERE YOU CONTACTED TO STAR IN JENIFA’S DIARY OR YOU SHOWED INTEREST?
A lot of young people actually have misplaced priorities, many of them despise days of little beginning. They forget that those little time that you use in learning you would never imagine who could be watching. I never met funke except professionally in the industry not like we had a relationship, but she had seen me feature on Ay’s crib and I remember that Ay’s Crib I featured in not more than 3episodes but she felt I did very well and you wouldn’t even believe that I wasn’t even paid. I did it because I loved it and when Ay called me I was like “ I want to be a part of this” but a lot of young people if I call them to do something for me and I wouldn’t be paying, they would be like “ all these rich people”. They always seem to forget that some of us do things and don’t earn. Yaw gave me the opportunity to be on his comedy show for one year and I did
very well not knowing that Funke Akindele was in the audience, she saw me again. At some other place I was working and as she was writing this Jennifer’s diary script her mind asked her to call Lolo and she did that was how Adaku came to be. Me being on Jennifer’s diary has nothing to do with the fact that I was on radio but has everything to do with me following my dreams and passion weather its paid or not I want to do it and that’s what got me the part.
PEOPLE BELIEVE JENIFA’S DIARY BROUGHT YOU TO THE SCREEN AND LIMELIGHT, HOW TRUE ?
I don’t think so really because I have been on radio long before I ever did Jennifer’s diary the only thing Jennifer’s diary did for me, is that it gave me visibility regularly. A lot of people cannot connect that the same woman that they’ve been listening to for the past ten years. I would say it gave me a lot of visual visibility and I really respect and appreciate Funke Akindele not just because she finds talent. There is hardly anywhere you see Funke Akindele sit down and wouldn’t spot a talent that is why I respect her and for me she is more than just a person I work for. She is more like a mentor. A woman I look up to.
WHO IS LOLO OUTSIDE THE RADIO STATION AND TV SCREEN?
Lolo outside the screen can be very boring. I am a very home body. I love to watch a lot of series on TV. I like to read a lot, I love fiction and hoping to be an author myself.
